A Student's Guide to Weighted Grades

How weighted grading actually works, why your grade isn't just an average of your scores, and how to check your own math.

If your syllabus says something like “Tests: 40%, Homework: 30%, Participation: 30%,” your final grade isn’t a simple average of every score you’ve earned — it’s a weighted average, and the difference matters a lot.

Why a plain average gives the wrong number

Say you scored 95% on homework and 70% on tests. A plain average would say 82.5%. But if tests count for 40% of your grade and homework only 30%, tests should pull more weight — and the real answer is lower than a plain average suggests, because you’re weaker in the category that counts for more.

The formula

weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

In plain terms: multiply each category’s score by its weight, add those up, then divide by the total of all the weights.

Worked example

Using the numbers above, plus a participation grade:

Step 1 — multiply each score by its weight:

  • Tests: 70 × 40 = 2,800
  • Homework: 95 × 30 = 2,850
  • Participation: 100 × 30 = 3,000

Step 2 — add them up: 2,800 + 2,850 + 3,000 = 8,650

Step 3 — add up the weights: 40 + 30 + 30 = 100

Step 4 — divide: 8,650 ÷ 100 = 86.5%

Compare that to the plain average of the three scores (88.3%) — close, but not the same, and the gap grows the more uneven your category weights and scores are.

What if the weights don’t add up to 100?

They should, according to most syllabi, but if you’re double-checking your own numbers and they add up to something else (say, 95% because one category isn’t finalized yet), the formula still works correctly — you’re just computing a weighted average across whatever weights you have. It’s a good way to catch a syllabus with a typo, or to estimate your grade before every category is final.

Where this trips people up

  • Adding scores instead of multiplying by weight first. The weight has to multiply the score, not just get tacked on separately.
  • Using percentages of points instead of percentage weights when the syllabus mixes both — for example, “the final is worth 100 points out of 500 total points” is a 20% weight, not a literal 100 in the formula above.
  • Forgetting a category entirely, which skews the weighted total even if every individual score is correct.
