How It Works

Each letter grade is converted to a quality point value on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0.0). Every course’s quality points are multiplied by its credit hours, all of those totals are added together, and the sum is divided by your total credit hours to produce your GPA.

Example

A student takes three courses in a semester:

Biology (4 credits, A), English (3 credits, B+), Art (2 credits, B).

Quality points: (4.0 × 4) + (3.3 × 3) + (3.0 × 2) = 16 + 9.9 + 6 = 31.9. Total credits: 4 + 3 + 2 = 9. GPA = 31.9 / 9 = 3.54.

What GPA scale does this calculator use?

This calculator uses the standard US unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A is worth 4.0 quality points, a B is worth 3.0, and so on down to an F at 0.0. Plus and minus grades (A-, B+, etc.) use the common intermediate values shown in the grade dropdown.

How is GPA calculated?

Each course’s grade is converted to quality points and multiplied by its credit hours. Add up all the quality points, add up all the credit hours, then divide total quality points by total credit hours. That average is your GPA.

Does this calculator support weighted GPA for honors or AP classes?

This calculator computes an unweighted GPA. If your school adds extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, use the weighted grade calculator or add the extra points to your course’s grade point manually before comparing to your school’s official transcript.

Can I calculate my cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?

Yes. Add every course from every semester you want included as its own row, with that course’s original credit hours and grade. The calculator will average across all of them the same way a cumulative GPA is calculated.

Why does my school’s official GPA differ slightly from this result?

Some schools use a 5.0 scale for honors courses, round differently, or exclude certain course types (like pass/fail classes) from GPA. This tool uses the standard 4.0 scale as a planning estimate — always confirm your official GPA with your school’s registrar or transcript.

What happens if I leave a course’s grade blank?

Rows with a missing grade or invalid credit hours are skipped automatically and will not affect your total credits or GPA, so you can add a placeholder row without breaking the calculation.
